Who Do I Support?

This page is mostly about people I actively give money to, along with some concept of who they are to me and why I support them. It's my hope that should someone see this, they'll find someone worth supporting. That said, I don't plan to disclose dollar amounts - it's up to everybody to decide for themselves what they can afford. I'm not a churchgoer, but the concept of a tithe has always made sense to me, a voluntary tax paid by those who can afford to do so that goes to support the community. For me, a significant part of that community is the creators, journalists, sometimes politicians, science communicators, and others where I believe their creations are a net positive to humanity, while I am fortunate enough to be able to afford to do so.

I encourage you to check out any of these people, whether you ultimately decide to support them or not.

Science Communicators

Folks who talk about science or science-adjacent topics, with a primary eye towards communicating information, debunking false information, or inspiring curiosity.

Music & The Arts

Our shared culture is our heritage, and must be valued. The arts are always profoundly underfunded, and I can't fix that, but at least I can try!

  • Ensemble 212 -- My piano teacher's orchestra. I might be biased, but they're always at peak performance. :)

Content Creators

Folks who make things I enjoy, for no further reason than that I enjoy it -- my support for them is, of course, a vote with my wallet to continue enjoying them.

  • Elle Cordova -- Nerdy/Geeky comedian and musician, always manages to hit my exact buttons.
  • Outsider Webcomic -- This is a slow, slow release cycle science fiction webcomic whose Patreon charges per page.

Journalism & Politics

I believe firmly that democracy, and the world at large, dies in darkness. The Washington Post may be Jeff Bezos' personal propaganda machine, and they don't get to own that motto. This is a mixed category because the roles of journalism, activism, political candidacy, and the boundaries between individuals and organisations is profoundly blurry now.
